When it comes to cleaning our homes, we’ve gathered 10 household items you’re probably forgetting to clean. We all have our routines and the areas we tend to focus on most, however, there are certain household items that often get overlooked and forgotten. Without proper attention, these items can harbor bacteria, dust, and other unpleasant things. Here are some items you’re probably forgetting to clean and the best ways to clean them.

Remote Controls

Remote controls are handled frequently and by multiple people, making them a prime spot for germs and bacteria to thrive.  To clean them, start by removing the batteries.  Then, use a soft cloth or a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the surface and buttons of the remote.  Be sure to let the remote dry completely before replacing the batteries and using it again.

Door Knobs and Handles

Just like remote controls, door knobs and handles are touched frequently and by multiple people, making them another high-touch area that often gets overlooked.  To clean them, start by wiping down the surface with a disinfectant wipe or a cloth dipped in a mixture of warm water and dish soap.  For knobs and handles with intricate designs, a toothbrush can be used to get into all the nooks and crannies.

Kitchen Sponges

Kitchen sponges are used to clean up spills and messes, but they can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria.  To clean them, start by rinsing the sponge with hot water.  Then, place it in the microwave for 30 seconds to kill any bacteria.  Be careful when removing the sponge from the microwave, as it will be hot.  Alternatively, you can soak the sponge in a mixture of warm water and vinegar for a few minutes before rinsing it out and letting it air dry.

Shower Curtains

Shower curtains can quickly accumulate mold and mildew if they aren’t cleaned regularly.  To clean them, start by removing the shower curtain from the rings.  Then, wash it in the washing machine with a mild detergent and a cup of white vinegar.  Be sure to wash it on a gentle cycle and hang it to dry.  For plastic shower curtains, you can also use a mixture of warm water and bleach to remove any mold or mildew.

Toothbrush Holders

Toothbrush holders are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning, but they can accumulate toothpaste residue and other germs over time.  To clean them, start by emptying out any toothbrushes and rinsing the holder with hot water.  Then, use a toothbrush and a mixture of warm water and dish soap to scrub away any buildup.  Rinse the holder thoroughly and let it air dry.

Lamp Shades

Lamp shades can quickly accumulate dust and pet hair, making them another commonly forgotten household item that needs to be cleaned.  To clean them, start by removing the shade from the lamp.  Then, use a lint roller or a soft brush to remove any loose debris.  For fabric lamp shades, you can also use a mixture of warm water and mild detergent to gently scrub away any stains or buildup.

Trash Cans

Trash cans can become quite dirty over time, especially if they aren’t cleaned regularly.  To clean them, start by emptying out any trash and washing the inside of the can with warm, soapy water.  Then, rinse the can thoroughly and let it air dry.  For extra cleaning power, you can also use a mixture of warm water and bleach.

Computer Keyboards

Computer keyboards can harbor a lot of bacteria and dust, especially if they are used frequently.  To clean them, start by unplugging the keyboard or turning off the computer.  Then, use a can of compressed air to blow away any loose debris or dust.  Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any remaining debris between the keys.  For a deeper clean, use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the surface of the keys and the surrounding areas.

Blinds

Blinds are another commonly overlooked household item that can collect dust and pet hair.  To clean them, start by using a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum attachment to remove any loose debris.  Then, fill a bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild detergent.  Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe down each individual slat, being careful not to bend or break them.  For wooden blinds, be sure to use a wood cleaner to avoid damaging the material.

Bed Pillows

Bed pillows can collect dust, sweat, and dead skin cells over time, making them a prime spot for bacteria to thrive.  To clean them, start by washing them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent.  Be sure to add a few tennis balls or dryer balls to the dryer to help fluff the pillows and prevent them from clumping.  For down pillows, be sure to use a down-specific detergent and dry them on a low heat setting to avoid damaging the feathers.

By focusing on these items you’re probably forgetting to clean and using the right cleaning methods, you can ensure that your home is as clean and germ-free as possible.  From computer keyboards and blinds, to bed pillows and trash cans, taking the time to clean these areas regularly can go a long way in promoting a healthy and hygienic living space. Remember to always read the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning any household item and to use caution when working with chemicals or hot water.
